Launch of the first European Network of AI Excellence Centres

Published on: 20 October 2020

The first European Network of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Excellence Centres held a kick-off meeting in the beginning of October in order to achieve future collaboration, under the motto of ‘The whole is more than the sum of its parts’. Five projects have been selected to form the network, following a call launched in July 2019 to bring together world-class researchers and establish a common approach, vision and identity for the European AI ecosystem. We are pleased with the fact that participants of the Netherlands AI Coalition take part in this important network and will contribute to the common approach and vision.

Consortia with strong Dutch input have scored very well in terms of using European funding for the call for European networks of AI Centres of Excellence. The AI4Media, TAILOR, HumanE AI, ELISE and VISION consortia submitted AI projects and were honoured in this call by the European Commission. In total, the substantial sum of € 5.9 of 50 million was raised by Dutch partners, a share of almost 12%. From the coalition we aim to stimulate consortia in the future and to support them in applying for European calls.

What will the European Network of AI Excellence Centres do?

  • Support and make the most of the AI talent and excellence already available in Europe;
  • Foster exchange of knowledge and expertise, and attract and maintain these talents;
  • Further develop collaboration between the network and industry;
  • Foster diversity and inclusion;
  • Develop a unifying visual identity.

These objectives will be achieved through five projects, which mobilise the best researchers in research and innovation on key AI topics: AI4Media, ELISE, HumanE-AI-Net, TAILOR and VISION. Click here for more information about these projects.
